Netflix is testing a feature that allows viewers to speed up or slow down programs. This comes from advice received from Android Police. Some Android users have reported on Twitter that their Netflix apps already have this feature, although their numbers appear to be quite low.
In a screenshot of Android Police, Netflix offers read speeds of “0.5x”, “0.75x”, “1x (Normal)”, “1.25x” and “1.5x”. Netflix probably adjusts the pitch for normal sound at higher speeds, but it’s curious what audio and visual details can be lost.
The move comes at a strange time as Netflix prepares to release “The Irishman” director Martin Scorcese. Recently, Scorcese has criticized comics films on the premise that they are “not a cinema”. It will be interesting to see if Netflix applies this variable speed rendering feature to all programming or if the creator’s intent comes into play.
